    Der katholische Gottesdienst wurde in Mulhouse, einer protestantischen Stadt, erst 1803 wieder eingeführt. Als die Zahl der Gläubigen wuchs, wurde beschlossen, eine Kirche zu bauen, die diese wachsende Bevölkerung aufnehmen konnte.
    In Kirche Saint-Etienne aus dem 19. Jahrhundert finden man die Pracht der großen französischen Kathedralen des 12. Jahrhunderts wieder, von denen diese Kirche inspiriert wurde.

    Der Heilige Stephan (Saint Etienne), dem diese Mulhouser Kirche geweiht ist, gehört zu den sieben ersten Diakonen der Jerusalemer Urgemeinde und ist zugleich der erste Märtyrer (Blutzeuge) des frühen Christentums. Die Kirche gedenkt seiner am zweiten Weihnachtstag, dem 26. Dezember.
