We've arrived in the Tuamotu Islands, our first South Pacific atoll. The Tuamotu archipelago consists of 78 atolls, 45 of which are inhabited.
Today we took a short walk along the beach and a detour to the outer reef. On the way back, we stumbled upon a lagoon inside the motus.

According to legend, the Tree of Life, in which all birds nested, once stood here. When it fell, the other islands were formed, and the birds came to live there as well.
This story alone gives an idea of how important this place was to the indigenous people. The site is correspondingly large, extending deep into the forest.

The atoll has a somewhat sad past. It was the logistics center for the French nuclear bomb tests. The bombs were detonated further south at two atolls. The area with the black tarpaulin is likely contaminated; this is where the observation aircraft were decontaminated. Otherwise, it's a nice place with friendly people.
