Rohan Fortress is a historic castle in Switzerland. The original structures were largely destroyed during World War II to make way for modern military installations, which were subsequently demolished. Today, only a few traces of the walls and foundations remain, testifying to the complex's ancient divisions.

The Fortezza Rohan is the ruin of a baroque fortress east of Susch in the Engadine valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It stands on the Chaschinas hill above the village at approximately 1,553 m above sea level. A medieval castle complex was mentioned in a document from 1578. Possible remains of this castle were demolished during the construction of 1635. Only excavations could reveal information about older settlements. The complex visible today was built in 1635 by Duke Henri II de Rohan during the Thirty Years' War (allegedly in just nine days?!).

Here you can visit the ruins of a 17th-century fortress. As you can still see today, the location is strategically well-placed, as it overlooks the valley, and the northern slope drops so steeply that no enemies were to be feared from there.

After the steep climb out of the Inn Valley, you can enjoy the fantastic view from between the fortress walls.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

Is the Fortezza Rohan Ruins site accessible for families with young children or strollers?

While the ruins themselves are open to all, accessing the Fortezza Rohan Ruins involves a steep climb from the Inn Valley. The terrain within the ruins can be uneven, with remnants of walls and foundations. Therefore, it might be challenging for strollers. Families with young children should be prepared for a hike and consider carrying smaller children or ensuring they are capable of navigating uneven paths.

Are dogs allowed at Fortezza Rohan Ruins and on the surrounding trails?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome at the Fortezza Rohan Ruins and on the hiking trails in the area. However, it's always recommended to keep them on a leash, especially given the historical nature of the site and the presence of other visitors. Please ensure you clean up after your pet to maintain the pristine environment.

What are the parking options available for visitors to Fortezza Rohan Ruins?

While the intro mentions parking, it's important to note that specific parking areas are usually found in the nearby village of Susch. From there, visitors typically embark on the hike up to the ruins. Parking can be limited, especially during peak season, so arriving earlier in the day is advisable.

How can I reach Fortezza Rohan Ruins using public transport?

The Fortezza Rohan Ruins are located east of Susch. Visitors can reach Susch via public transport, typically by train or bus services connecting to the Lower Engadine valley. From Susch, the ruins are accessible via hiking trails. Check local transport schedules for the most up-to-date connections to Susch.

What is the typical duration needed to explore the Fortezza Rohan Ruins?

The time needed to explore the ruins themselves is relatively short, perhaps 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your interest in history and photography. However, the overall experience includes a steep hike to and from the site, which can add significant time. Plan for at least 2-3 hours for the entire excursion, including the ascent and descent.

What kind of terrain should hikers expect on the trails leading to Fortezza Rohan Ruins?

Hikers should expect a steep climb from the Inn Valley to reach the ruins. The trails are generally well-maintained but can be uneven in places, especially within the ruins themselves, where you'll find remnants of walls and foundations. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Are there any specific historical events or features at Fortezza Rohan Ruins that are particularly noteworthy?

Absolutely. The fortress was built in 1635 by Duke Henri II de Rohan during the Thirty Years' War, allegedly in just nine days, to provide strategic backing against Spanish and Austrian forces. Notable features include its star-shaped design, remnants of original walls (2.5 to 5 meters high), and evidence of wooden battlements designed to deter storm ladders. A two-story round tower at the southwest corner also stands out.

What are the best seasons to visit Fortezza Rohan Ruins to avoid crowds or for specific weather conditions?

While the site is accessible year-round, the warmer months offer clear trails and unobstructed views. To avoid larger crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) or on weekdays. Winter visits are possible for those prepared for snow and colder conditions, offering a different, often more solitary, experience.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near Susch for visitors?

Yes, the village of Susch, located at the base of the hill leading to the ruins, offers various amenities. You can find local cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options ranging from guesthouses to hotels. It's a good idea to check availability and opening hours, especially outside of peak tourist seasons.

Can I find any loop trails around Fortezza Rohan Ruins for a longer hike?

While the primary route to the ruins is often an out-and-back, there are various hiking trails in the Lower Engadine valley that can be combined to create longer loop excursions. Hikers can explore different paths leading up to the Chaschinas hill or integrate the visit into a broader tour of the region. Consult local trail maps or komoot for detailed route options.

Are there any viewpoints near Fortezza Rohan Ruins that offer different perspectives of the valley?

The Fortezza Rohan Ruins themselves are a premier viewpoint, offering commanding panoramic views of the Inn Valley directly from within the fortress walls. The strategic location on Chaschinas hill was chosen precisely for this advantage. As you ascend or descend, various spots along the trails also provide picturesque vistas of the surrounding Engadine landscape.
