    Surprise Lake is just 20 miles east of Amphitheater Lake at 9,570 ft. Like its neighbor Surprise Lake is a beautiful, remote-feeling alpine lake that is a challenging spot to get to. Ringed by dramatic rocky peaks, this stunning lake is a great place to take photographs, eat a snack and rest before either heading to Amphitheater Lake or back down into the valley.

    Surprise Lake is on the way to Amphitheater Lake and can be reached from the Lupine Meadows parking lot on the Amphitheater Lake Trail. It is located right next to Lake Amphitheater and is a bit smaller.
