The church was built in 1225 at the then very small fishing and trading place by the river Lagan. It was consecrated to St. Clement, patron saint of seafarers and merchants.
In the 15th century, a church tower was built and in 1632 a bell was added.
In a fire in 1802, the nave and the altar were damaged. They could not be rebuilt until 1811.
The ceiling painting is by the artist Einar Forseth and also by the artist Erik Olsson you can see works in the church.
