Until the end of the 17th century, the 744-meter-high Birkenberg, along with the nearby 731-meter-high Heidelberg, was called Hedelberg. Then the name changed to Birkenberg, reflecting the alternating field-forest management practiced at the time. Over the course of fifteen to forty years, the birch trees growing here were felled, and the remaining area was grazed until the population of fast-growing birch trees regenerated. Thus, the cycle began again. At the end of the 19th century, this form of forestry was discontinued, and the area was converted to conifers.

The Birkenberg
with 744 m is the 1168 highest mountain in Bavaria and the 1658 highest mountain in Germany. In the municipality of Bad Neualbenreuth, it is the third highest elevation after Muglberg and Grünhau.
The name of the mountain is more recent. The entire mountain ridge was originally called “Hedelberg” together with Heidelberg and dates back to the mining times around Bad Neualbenreuth until the end of the 17th century. Sometime in the aftermath, the name changed to “Birkenberg”.
