Southwest of Bolzano, above the small village of Frangart in the municipality of Eppan, Sigmundskron Castle sits atop a porphyry rock, one of the largest castle complexes in South Tyrol. The original name, "Formigar," comes from the Latin "formicaria." It is one of the oldest known names for a castle in South Tyrol. The structure was first mentioned under this name around 945 AD; later, the name was changed to "Firmian." The Italian name for Sigmundskron is still Firmiano.
