Natural monument directly on the Westweg, caused by weathering of the layered Buntsandstein.

    Vandring

The approximately 100 m wide rock formation of the Great Volzemer Stones consists of huge sandstone blocks up to 10 m high. Rain and seepage water wash away the soft clayey-sandy layers of earth. The water that has penetrated then blasts off the exposed boulders, which collect as heaps of boulders at the foot of the rocks.
The quartz-bearing stones of the middle federal sandstone are also called "champanger stones". They are particularly good for making millstones.

    Vandring

A wonderful natural highlight right on the hiking trail. The information board explains briefly and comprehensibly what the beautiful rock formations are all about. Until 1949, blanks for fountain troughs and millstones were still made here. If you are attentive, you can still find workpieces that have been started.

What are the key geological features of the Volzemer Stein?

The Volzemer Stein is primarily composed of Middle Bunter Sandstone, forming a distinctive 'sea of rocks' or blockfield. The main formations are the Großer Volzemer Stein, which is about 100 meters wide and up to 10 meters high, and the Kleiner Volzemer Stein. These rocks contain quartz crystals, causing them to glisten and earning them historical nicknames like 'Kristall-Sandsteine' and 'Champagnersteine'. The area also exhibits a unique microclimate due to the rock formations.

Are there any specific viewpoints or hidden natural features at Volzemer Stein?

While the entire area around the Großer Volzemer Stein offers impressive views of the rock formations themselves, the Kleiner Volzemer Stein is a slightly less prominent but equally interesting feature located a short distance off the main path. Attentive hikers can also spot unfinished millstones and well troughs, remnants from when the durable sandstone was quarried here, adding a historical layer to the natural beauty.

What is the best way to get to Volzemer Stein by public transport?

The Volzemer Stein is situated near Dobel, which can be accessed by bus services. From larger towns like Pforzheim or Bad Herrenalb, you can typically find bus connections to Dobel. From Dobel, the natural monument is accessible via well-marked hiking trails, including the Westweg. It's advisable to check current bus schedules as they can vary seasonally.

Is the Volzemer Stein area suitable for a winter hike or other winter activities?

Yes, the Dobel high plateau where the Volzemer Stein is located is popular for winter activities. While the rock formations themselves are impressive year-round, the area transforms into a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during winter. Hikers should be prepared for snow and potentially icy conditions on trails during this season.

How long does it typically take to hike around the Volzemer Stein?

The time required to explore the Volzemer Stein depends on your chosen route. Many popular trails, such as sections of the Westweg or the Engel-Weg-Dobel, pass directly through or by the monument. A dedicated exploration of the rock formations themselves might take 30-60 minutes, but combining it with a circular hike in the surrounding forest could easily extend to 2-4 hours or more, depending on the trail length and your pace.

Are there any family-friendly trails or activities specifically designed for children at Volzemer Stein?

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Volzemer Stein?

Yes, the trails around Volzemer Stein are generally dog-friendly. Many visitors enjoy bringing their dogs along for walks. However, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in natural monument areas and when encountering other hikers or wildlife. Please also ensure you clean up after your pet.

What is the historical significance of the Volzemer Stein beyond its natural formation?

Before its designation as a natural monument in 1949, the local population utilized the durable Bunter Sandstone of the Volzemer Stein as a quarry. They extracted rock to produce millstones and well troughs. If you look closely, you can still observe unfinished workpieces and blanks for these items scattered in the area, offering a tangible link to the region's past industries.

What kind of terrain and elevation changes can hikers expect on trails around Volzemer Stein?

The terrain around Volzemer Stein involves exploring large sandstone blocks, some up to 10 meters high, so sturdy footwear is recommended for navigating the rocky paths. How crowded does Volzemer Stein get on weekends or during peak season?
