At Taronga Western Plains Zoo, African lions live in spacious habitats designed to reflect open savannah landscapes. Known as the only truly social big cats, lions live in structured family groups called prides, usually made up of related females, their cubs and a coalition of males. While males are recognised for their manes, lionesses do most of the hunting.
In the wild, African lion numbers are declining due to habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Taronga supports conservation partnerships that work to protect wild populations and promote coexistence across parts of Africa.
