Frederick the Great redesigned the Gendarmenmarkt in the 1770s. After the stables of the "Gens d’armes" regiment had been removed, Johann Boumann built the French Comedy House here until 1776. When this burned down in 1817, King Friedrich Wilhelm III. the order for a new building to Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Today the Konzerthaus Berlin offers a wide range of programs, from symphony concerts to chamber music and music theater.

The Schauspielhaus (from 1821: Royal Playhouse, from 1919: Prussian State Theater, since 1984: Konzerthaus Berlin) is a monument on the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin's Mitte district. Built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the years 1818 to 1821, it is one of the main works of German classicism. Burnt out during the Second World War, it was restored from 1976 to 1984 faithfully on the outside and restored in a historicizing form as a concert hall on the inside.
