The Botafumeiro is a huge metal container that is balanced from the heights of the transept of the cathedral by means of a system of pulleys and ropes. He has a height of approximately 1.60 meters and a weight of around 80 kilograms. When put into operation, it is filled with burning coals and a mixture of incense is added to it, creating an intensely aromatic smoke.
The purpose of the Botafumeiro is to perfume and purify the air of the cathedral during liturgical celebrations, especially in the "Pilgrim's Mass", which is celebrated daily at 12 noon.
