Arklow Rock was once an active volcano. The local rock is a mixture of extrusive and intrusive igneous types; the blue basalt and speckled grey granite are most valued and the reason for the quarry.
The Arklow Rock Cliff Walk was set up by the quarry operators to allow walkers to visit the area without straying into the active quarry.
