The brothers Cyril and Methodius, originally from Thessaloniki in the former Eastern Roman Empire, were Byzantine scholars and priests. They jointly carried out Christian missionary work among Slavic peoples in the 9th century, which is why they are called the Apostles of the Slavs. They created the first script for the Old Slavic language – the Glagolitic alphabet.

Their work had a profound influence on the cultural development of the Slavs. After their deaths, their disciples continued their missionary work among other Slavic peoples. In the Orthodox Church, they are venerated as saints with the attribute of apostles.
