The small town of Carmine Superiore was also badly hit by the plague in 1630; the writer Manzoni reports about it in his famous novel "The Fiancés".
Because many sick people had sought refuge in the church, the building had to be disinfected after the end of the epidemic, which is why the valuable fresco cycles were covered with a layer of mortar. Only during the restoration work in the years 1932 to 1933 and 1997 to 2002 were the paintings brought to light again.

Vandring

The Canero path leads through an area with very high mosquito populations. Be sure to wear long clothes and rub mosquito repellent on yourself. !! (Last time I only saw it in the jungle in the border area between Mexico and Guatemala)
Otherwise a very nice hike! We recommend.
