In the nearby Wittelsbacher Palais (demolished) was the Munich headquarters of the Gestapo with a prison during National Socialism, where many people were exposed to the terror of the Nazi regime. To commemorate those who were persecuted and murdered, the area freed by the war destruction and road relocation was dedicated to these victims in 1946.
In 2013 the area was redesigned in its current form. The granite column with the eternal flame behind a bronze grille was designed by the sculptor Andreas Sobeck in 1985.

The Square of the Victims of National Socialism is a green space in Munich that creates the transition from Maximiliansplatz to Brienner Straße. This area was given its current name in 1946.
