Black Hill Trig Point

In the far north of the Peak District, Black Hill rises out of a vast moorland landscape. The country has many hills that share this name but West Yorkshire’s is a particularly favourite for many adventurers and sees the grand Pennine Way cross its summit.

Hitting 1,909 feet (582 m) in altitude, only two hills are higher in the national park, Kinder Scout and Bleaklow. Sitting in expansive, exposed moorland, the summit of Black Hill is a peaty plateau, like many of the park’s bigger hills. As a result, the views you gain can be found around the hill’s edges, rather than at its central top.

A Peak District moorland hill with a black heart

There’s historically been little plantlife at the hill’s summit, allowing its peat terrain to give it a black look. Due to its poor drainage, it’s often extremely boggy, like many of its neighbours, and some paths are inaccessible after rain. The main route across it – the Pennine Way – has been paved here, allowing you to reach the summit no matter what the rain’s been up to.

You can approach the summit from a variety of directions and popular starting points include Longdendale to the south and Digley Reservoir which has a trail leading first to Wessenden Head. Thanks to the myriad routes and hills, you can create as short or as long an adventure as you like.

You’ll know the summit when you see it thanks to a trig pillar and a slight mound, called Soldier’s Lump. You can explore this moorland hill throughout the year but always wear waterproof boots and check the forecast, for conditions can change quickly and it holds an exposed position.

    Vandring

Legendary fellwalker Alfred Wainwright described Black Hill as a desolate and hopeless quagmire. Whilst it can be rather bleak here, especially if the weather’s bad, the remote landscape has a wonderfully-rugged charm. In clear conditions, you can see for miles around. Watch out for bogs, though, even during the hottest of summers.

    Quite boggy but rewarding views

Not that much of a boggy trip if you are on the Pennine Way otherwise it is. Black Hill is the old historic county top for Cheshire, a trig pointed summit and a UK designated Marilyn. A good one to do along with Black Chew Head, the county top for Greater Manchester and pick up another trig point at Hey Edge. See here for details: komoot.com/tour/383489718
