The upswing ended abruptly as Dvigrad was affected by war and disease over the centuries.
When malaria broke out in the 17th century, only about 10 percent of the approximately 700 inhabitants survived this epidemic and then left the city.
From the city remained nothing but about 200 houses ruins and the ruins of the Basilica of St. Sophie.
