    Bjergvandring

Narrow and close to the rock, this beautiful path leads to the little church, which hangs in the rock like an eagle's nest and offers a magnificent view. Built in memory of the Stoderzinken pioneer, Emil Ritter von Horstig, it is now a much-visited lookout point

Built in 1902 by Emil Ritter von Horstig. He could not understand that the denominations found no common ground. That's why he wanted to build bridges and set an unmistakable sign of community. He decided to build a mountain church at a dizzying height and free for all denominations. He therefore did not have it consecrated by any religious community and expressed this with the saying "Come EVERYONE to me".
The little church was acquired by the Gröbming mountain rescue service in 1993.

It has pulled me back here because of the scenic beauties and the grandeur of this peace church. Who thinks it is set in stone by Peter Rosegger, namely "to keep silent and to be happy", can indeed experience blissful moments here. They are suitable for prayers, thanks and praises of God.
The way from the upper parking lot to Friedenskirchle is well signposted and easy to master even for 75+ with sturdy shoes and best walking sticks. But you should also be free from giddiness, although these passages are well secured.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What are the most popular starting points or routes to reach the Friedenskircherl?

The most common starting point for the hike to the Friedenskircherl is the upper parking lot on the Stoderzinken Alpenstraße. From there, the path is well-signposted and leads directly to the chapel. While the intro mentions various routes, this specific starting point is consistently highlighted by visitors for its convenience and clear signage.

How challenging is the hike to the Friedenskircherl, and what kind of terrain can I expect?

The hike to the Friedenskircherl is generally considered manageable, even for those over 75 with sturdy shoes and walking sticks, as noted by visitors. However, it involves a narrow path that hugs the rock face. While railings are installed in the steepest sections during summer for safety, a good head for heights is beneficial for certain passages. The terrain is rocky and uneven in parts, requiring careful footing.

Is the Friedenskircherl accessible during winter, and what are the conditions like for a winter hike?

While the intro focuses on warmer months, a winter hike to the Friedenskircherl is possible but requires specific preparation and caution. The Stoderzinken Alpenstraße may have limited access or require winter tires/chains. The path to the chapel can be icy or snow-covered, making it significantly more challenging and potentially dangerous. It's crucial to check local conditions, avalanche warnings, and ensure you have appropriate winter hiking gear, such as crampons and trekking poles, before attempting a winter ascent.

Is the hike to the Friedenskircherl suitable for families with young children?

Yes, the hike is often described as family-friendly, as mentioned in the intro. However, given the narrow path and sections requiring a head for heights, it's best suited for families with children who are comfortable with mountain trails and have good sure-footedness. Parents should assess their children's hiking experience and comfort with heights before embarking on the trail. The path is well-secured in summer, which adds to its family appeal.

Are dogs allowed on the trail to the Friedenskircherl?

There is no explicit prohibition against dogs on the trail to the Friedenskircherl. However, given the narrow, rocky path and sections with railings, it's important to consider your dog's agility and comfort in such terrain. Dogs should be kept on a leash at all times for their safety and the safety of other hikers, especially in crowded sections or near steep drops.

How long does it typically take to hike to the Friedenskircherl from the main parking area?

From the upper parking lot on the Stoderzinken Alpenstraße, the hike to the Friedenskircherl is relatively short. While exact times vary based on individual pace and stops for photos, most visitors report it takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes one-way. This makes it an accessible and rewarding short hike.

Are there any facilities like cafes or restaurants near the Friedenskircherl or its trailhead?

While the Friedenskircherl itself is a remote chapel with no facilities, there are typically mountain huts or restaurants located near the upper parking lot on the Stoderzinken Alpenstraße. These establishments offer refreshments and meals, providing a convenient stop before or after your hike. It's advisable to check their operating hours, especially outside peak season.

What is the historical significance of the Friedenskircherl beyond its construction in 1902?

Beyond its construction in 1902 by Emil Ritter von Horstig as a memorial, the Friedenskircherl holds deeper significance. It was built as a symbol of mutual tolerance and respect among different denominations, with Horstig expressing his desire to build bridges and create a place free for all. The chapel was never consecrated by a specific religious community, embodying his saying, "Come EVERYONE to me." In 1993, it was acquired by the Gröbming mountain rescue service, ensuring its preservation. Its recognition as the "most beautiful place in Austria" in 2022 further cemented its cultural importance.

Are there any specific viewpoints or hidden gems to look out for along the trail to the Friedenskircherl?

The entire trail to the Friedenskircherl offers magnificent panoramic views, particularly of the Dachstein Glacier and the Ennstal valley basin. While the chapel itself is the primary landmark, the journey along the narrow path, often described as an "eagle's nest" experience, is a highlight. There aren't specific "hidden gems" as the path is quite direct, but every turn offers a new perspective of the dramatic mountain landscape. Take your time to appreciate the views from various points along the secured sections.

What should I wear or bring for a hike to the Friedenskircherl?

For a comfortable and safe hike, it's recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip. Bringing walking sticks is highly advisable, especially for those less accustomed to mountain terrain or for added stability on the narrow path. Depending on the weather, layers of clothing are recommended, as conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Don't forget water, snacks, sun protection, and a camera to capture the stunning views.
