"Combining the useful with the beautiful" was the motto of Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, which also included flood protection on the Elbe and Mulde rivers. Thus, from 1770 to 1800, numerous watchtowers were built along the dikes of the Garden Kingdom. These functional buildings were integrated into the beautification of the region through very different external forms. Among them is the so-called "Limesturm" (Limes Tower), in the style of a Roman watchtower. It is marked as the "Hohe(s) Wachhaus" (High Guard House) on the map of the Ducal Offices of Anhalt-Dessau from 1817 and 1818.

The similarity to the dovecotes built around 1800 on the farms of Riesigk, Vockerode, and Griesen cannot be denied, which is why the Limesturm is also often referred to as a "dovecote" by locals. All feature a projecting half-timbered floor above a brick ground floor and a pyramidal or gable roof.

Erhard Hirsch points out that a reference to the motif of a late medieval toll tower, which still stands today on the outer curve of the Circus Maximus in Rome, is clearly conceivable.
