The Meiningen merchant Reinhold Goetz discovered a crevice while working in his mountain garden in 1915.
He climbed into the mountain and, only with the help of friends and relatives, immediately began to work on it.
This lasted until 1932.
In 1932 and 1933 the cave was made accessible.
A grand opening ceremony took place on April 22, 1934.

Cave and hut magic above the roofs of Meiningen!
The Götz Cave is Europe's largest accessible crevasse cave. It is one of the top sights in Meiningen. A guided tour through the cave takes about 40 minutes. You should be prepared for a temperature of 8 degrees Celsius and slippery ground. But the visit is definitely worth it!
Afterwards, it is definitely recommended to stop off at the "Zur Column" hut and enjoy the view over the city of Meiningen in addition to food and drink.
