Valletta's most important city gate was built in the 16th century as a simple wooden bridge that connected the city and the surrounding area. In 1632 a new gate with a large stone arch replaced the old one, but the bridge remained wooden. In 1853, during the British era, a third Victorian-style gate was built. In 1965 the fourth gate was completed in the style of Italian modernism. And just a few decades later, in 2014, Renzo Piano's very practical version of the gate was finally created.

City Gate - also known as Putirjal in Maltese - is the main entrance to Malta's capital, Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is colloquially called Bieb il-Belt, "gate of the city".
