"... The Rhine-Herne Canal is part of the northwest German canal network and is 45 kilometers long with a height difference between Duisburg and Herne of 36 meters. The structure was commissioned in 1914 as a connection between the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Rhine. The Rhine-Herne Canal has been subject to various adjustments for mining and traffic-related reasons over the past 85 years.

The collieries and the flourishing heavy industry in cities such as Herne, Gelsenkirchen and Essen lacked an economic transport route very soon after the beginning of industrialisation. Construction of the RHK began in 1909.
At that time, the Emscher was artificially relocated and today it runs directly parallel to the canal over long stretches, which overcomes a height difference of approx. 36m over a length of 45 km.
