The gate towers (from north to south Münztor, Markttor, Krahntor) were originally open to the inside. For practical reasons, however, they were converted into half-timbered buildings at an early stage. The half-timbered structure that can still be seen today dates from the time of the restoration in 1909 or is even more recent. The towers on the banks of the Rhine are connected by a covered battlement, which is ideal for a walk and which used to be a connecting path between the residential buildings on the Rhine side during floods.
