The Monument
Form and Material
The Jewish Monument in Gulpen (municipality of Gulpen-Wittem) consists of five horizontal and vertical concrete elements. A Star of David is depicted on the central column. The memorial is 6 meters 30 high, 3 meters 50 wide, and 2 meters 10 deep.
Text
A Hebrew text taken from the Book of Leviticus is inscribed on the central column. The translation is:
"LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS MUCH AS YOURSELF.
I AM THE ETERNAL."

Visual artist Appie Drielsma from Maastricht was commissioned to create a monument.
Albert (Appie) Drielsma
(Maastricht, November 3, 1937 – Maastricht, July 6, 2014)
was a Dutch sculptor.
Appie Drielsma grew up in a Jewish family in Maastricht. He survived the Second World War by going into hiding as a boy. He later incorporated this traumatic experience into his work.
In Maastricht, he trained as a visual artist, first at the Secondary School of Applied Arts (1957-1959) with Albert Meertens, and then at the Jan van Eyck Academy (1959-1963) with Fred Carasso. He taught in Tilburg and Maastricht.
