    Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II was created in 1866 to provide Pisa with a more prestigious connection to the train station. A gate and walls of the medieval city fortifications were demolished to build the square. Their foundations are partially exposed in the underground parking garage beneath the square.

    Surrounding the elliptical square are impressive buildings from several eras in various architectural styles, including the post office from 1929, the former Pisa Provincial Palace from 1935, and the Chamber of Commerce from 1952.
