"During this time, the Gelpetal lost its importance as an industrial location and the Gelpetal as well as the neighboring Saalbachtal became a popular local recreation area for Wuppertal and Remscheid. The construction of the Ronsdorf dam in 1898 accelerated this development. Numerous tourist restaurants with well-known names such as Bergisch Nice, Gelper Hof and Zillertal.(...)."

"... Today, Gelpe and Saalbach are very near-natural watercourses. That wasn't always the case. In the past, hydropower was used to drive the grinding pots and hammers. This is how Wuppertal became one of the earliest industrial areas on the continent. Along the historic Gelpetal industrial history trail you can hike through this history. The nature trail helps to discover the remains of hammers and huts in ponds and ground monuments. The Clemenshammer shows the historical technology including the water wheel in action. (Overview plan at the Zillertal house and at the Ronsdorf dam.) ..."
