The Schmala Dam was first constructed in 1905, when the town of Brilon began extracting industrial and drinking water from the Schmala Valley. Because the water demand of Brilon's residents steadily increased, a collection pond (lower pond) with a capacity of approximately 4,000 m³ was built at the Schmala estuary between 1956 and 1958. Because water demand continued to grow, the construction of the Schmala Dam became necessary. The design for this dam was presented in August 1985. Its construction lasted from 1988 to 1989, and it was commissioned in 1989.
