The church building, designed by Eugène Gife, dates from 1852. A peculiarity in the design is that the transepts do not protrude, which is rare in this type of church. The pentagonal choir receives light through seven large windows. Although Wechelderzande was certainly not one of the richer villages in the Kempen at the time, the Sint-Amelbergakerk houses many art treasures.
The 37-metre-high protected church tower is a true gem of simple Kempen Gothic. It was probably built at the end of the 15th century. The spire dates from 1674-1675.
