Hickling is the largest of all the broads. A year-round haven for wildlife, the nature reserve is home to many species of bird including cranes, goldeneyes, shovelers, marsh harriers, pochards, teals, bitterns, water rails and Cetti's warblers. You can also spot rare insects, including Swallowtail butterflies and emperor dragonflies. The broad was formed, like most others in the region, by the flooding of depressions left by peat digging in the medieval period.
