The carillon in the town hall tower is a unique feature. It consists of 28 cast steel bells with a total weight of 2,300 kilograms, the heaviest weighing 375 kilograms and the lightest four. It is the first carillon in the world made of cast steel. The original carillon was destroyed in the war; the current one was presented to the city by the Bochum Steelworks in 1951. It plays well-known folk melodies. Experts have rated it as the best carillon in Germany, comparable to the old, famous Dutch carillons.
