Embark on a moderate hike along the Historic royal hunting trail to Croce della Roley, a route that takes you through natural mountain paths in Gran Paradiso National Park. This 4.5-mile (7.2 km) journey involves a significant climb of 2130 feet (649 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 49 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you will experience the changing alpine scenery, leading to the prominent wooden cross at Croce della Roley, which sits on a rocky outcrop and offers expansive views.
To begin your adventure, head to Camping Pont Breuil, a large campground that serves as the trailhead. You can reach the starting point at Pont village by local bus from Aosta, making it a convenient option if you prefer not to drive. Parking is available at Pont village. Consider starting early to enjoy the peaceful mountain environment and avoid the busiest times on the trail.
This route follows an old royal hunting road, originally built for King Victor Emmanuel II in the 19th century, adding a layer of historical significance to your hike. From the Croce della Roley, you will be treated to panoramic views of the Gran Paradiso massif, with its snow-covered peaks dominating the horizon. The trail also leads you into the Nivolet plains, where the landscape opens up into vast alpine meadows alongside the Dora del Nivolet mountain stream.
