This is a former sluice lock. Friedrichschleuse (also the name of the place) The name of the lock goes back to the Prussian King Frederick the Great, who was also Prince of East Frisia from 1744. The floodgates are always open. Lock has historical value. Insignificant for shipping. Numerous restaurants, including Janssen Fisch, invite you to linger 😉👍🍺.

The open sluice lock with a bascule bridge above it allowed the sailing ships with masts free passage into the harbor behind the dyke.

The Friedrichsschleuse is located on the Harle, halfway between the historic Sielhafen in Carolinensiel and Harlesiel.
In earlier times, the harbor entrance for the Carolinensieler Hafen, today the museum harbor, was here. The bascule bridge, built in the Dutch style and restored in 1990, also allows sailing ships to pass through to the museum harbor in the center of Carolinensiel.

In 1959 the lock system was built. Shortly before the place was founded. The bascule bridge was rebuilt in 1989 again.
