The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (German: Basilika Groß Sankt Marien) is a Roman Catholic church in Trento, the capital of the Italian province of Trento. The parish church of the Archdiocese of Trento was built at the beginning of the 16th century by order of Prince-Bishop Bernard of Cles and soon hosted the meetings of the Council of Trent. In November 1973, Pope Paul VI elevated the Church of St. Mary to the rank of minor basilica.

The church was built between 1520 and 1524, according to the will of the Prince-Bishop Bernardo Clesio, by the architect Antonio Medaglia from Como, on the remains of the medieval Santa Maria ad Nives (an early Christian church), in an area that returns numerous archaeological evidence of the Roman city.

On December 12, 1545, it was the destination of the first solemn procession of the Council of Trent, on the eve of the opening of the sessions, and subsequently it was the scene of several smaller ceremonies. From 1562 onwards, the general assemblies of the third phase of the Council, i.e., the final phase (1562–1563), were held here. During this period, a semicircular wooden platform was built in the church for this purpose, which is documented by engravings and paintings.[2] The most famous is the work by Elia Naurizio, preserved in the Tridentine Diocesan Museum.
