Built during the Thirty Years' War (1637), the square was opened in 1765 by Mayor Maufoux and transformed into a promenade.
Equipped with a beautiful staircase according to the plans of the architect Le Noir-Le Romain, it was named Square des Lions (Lions Square) because of the two statues that guarded the entrance.
There is also a monument in memory of Pierre Joigneaux (1815-1892), member of parliament and promoter of the Beaune wine school.
The old Saint-Martin gate, which controlled access to the city from the west, only disappeared in 1888.
