Around 1200, the castle was part of the city fortifications and was intended to protect access to the city from the direction of the Westerschelde. The building that remains today is only the gate wing of the original castle, most of which was demolished in the 19th century when the quays along the Scheldt were straightened to prevent silting.

This castle built in the rock itself (steen means stone in Dutch) is considered the oldest building in Antwerp, dating back to the early Middle Ages. It was built as a fortress from which to monitor Viking attacks on the city, and later served as a royal residence and, finally, as a prison for five centuries. More recently it was a naval museum.
