Vandring

The Dunkirk lighthouse, also called Risban, is located near the port of Dunkirk. The lighthouse was built in 1842. It was automated in 1985 and is still in use. It is the second highest lighthouse in France, only the lighthouse of Île Vierge is even higher.

The lighthouse stands on a square building that forms the base. The round tower has an inside diameter of 3.9 meters, it is made of brick and finished with a smooth coating on the outside. In the tower there is a staircase with 276 steps.[1]

Initially the lamp used vegetable oil, which was replaced by mineral oil in 1875.[1] The light has been electric since 1885. The tower was manned until 1985, but that year it was automated, causing the lighthouse keeper to disappear.[1] The lamp has a power of 1000 watts and is visible up to 29 nautical miles.

Dunkirk's first lighthouse was built in 1683 and demolished in 1713 as a result of the Peace of Utrecht.[1] On November 5, 1838, ministerial approval was granted for the construction of a new lighthouse on the same site. The contractor Bourdon et compagnie was awarded the work.[1] Work began in 1841 and it was put into use on May 1, 1843. Construction cost 212,586 French francs at the time.[1]
