"Afspanning Reuzenhuis" is a remnant of the 1897 World's Fair in Brussels, rebuilt here in 1898 as a guesthouse and inn. After the First World War, it served as a temporary rest home for Dominicans.
The building was intended as a liberal, "Gothic" reconstruction of the house of the same name, which was built in 1558 against the old castle in Antwerp and destroyed by fire in 1856. The inscription that runs across the entire facade refers to that year, 1558.
The building is currently undergoing extensive restoration.

The imposing building is a remnant of the World Exhibition of 1897 in Brussels.
De Afspanning was re-erected here in 1898 together with the pagaddertoren.
The building is a reconstruction of a house of the same name that was built in 1558 against the old Burcht in Antwerp and destroyed by fire in 1856.
The building that can now be admired was split into two houses.
