The Bornem Abbey library is one of the most important heritage libraries in the province of Antwerp. The collection contains over 34,000 works, including a significant number of manuscripts, incunabula, and post-incunabula. The library also houses a significant number of early printed works on Saint Bernard and the Cistercian Order.

Vandring

Bornem Abbey was founded in 1603 by Pedro Coloma, a career Spanish nobleman who landed in the Netherlands with Alexander Farnese's army. You can see his statue in the abbey square. The abbey was first populated by the English Dominicans, was sold at public auction during the French Revolution, and eventually came into the hands of the Cistercians. The buildings were recently restored. Some have been converted into private residences, but a large portion is open to the public. And thank goodness for that, because it's a feast for the eyes!
