The biological station was founded in 1859 by Jean Victor Coste, a professor at the Collège de France. This makes it one of the oldest marine biology research centers in the world. In addition to research, there is also a collection/exhibition open to the public.

With over 150 years of scientific work, the Marine Station of Concarneau, a site in the region of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, is the oldest station still active in the world.
