The Augustów Canal near Augustów is an artificial waterway built in the 19th century that crosses Polish and Belarusian territory.
When Prussia introduced unusually high customs duties for the transit of Polish goods through Prussian territory in 1821, the water route across the Vistula to the Baltic Sea was virtually cut off for Poland, so it was forced to look for alternatives. The Polish Minister of Economy Franciszek Ksawery Drucki-Lubecki brought up the idea of opening a new trade route that would connect Poland with the port of Ventspils (Windau), bypassing Prussian territory in the north (Wikipedia).

The lock is a monument. Besides, it's a beautiful place. Interesting lock and beautiful views of the water. The water is clear and you can see a lot of fish.

Białobrzegi Lock – Located on the 26.9 kilometer of the canal. Interestingly, in the early 1960s, the sluice was dismantled and rebuilt 150 meters further, on the other side of the Augustów - Białystok road. Apparently, this step was taken for military reasons. It was rebuilt using the original art.
