The Judenplatz in Vienna with the memorial for the victims of National Socialism is a rather quiet place that is rarely visited by tourists. A very nice ensemble of houses and the Jewish Museum along with the Lessing Monument and the Museum Judenplatz complete the square. All around beautiful rather quiet streets and passages.

The Lessing Memorial on Judenplatz in Vienna honors the important German poet and thinker Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). It was unveiled in 1981, on the 200th anniversary of the death of Lessing, who was known for his Enlightenment ideas and his efforts to promote religious tolerance. The memorial was created by the sculptor Siegfried Charoux and shows Lessing in a pensive pose. Its positioning on Judenplatz is reminiscent of Lessing's commitment to Jewish emancipation and his famous Enlightenment dramas such as "Nathan the Wise," which advocated humanity and tolerance.

The central place of remembrance on Judenplatz is the Shoah memorial by Rachel Whiteread. The names of the places where Austrian Jews died during the Nazi regime are recorded on floor tiles embedded around the memorial.
The memorial represents an outward-facing and hermetically sealed library. The memorial's shelves are stocked with a seemingly endless number of editions of one and the same book, representing the large number of victims and their life stories. The contents of the books remain hidden. The wing doors, which indicate the possibility of coming and going, cannot be opened.
