Minckelers (also called Minckeleers) is seen as the discoverer of light gas and gas lighting.
The design of the statue and the plaques is by Bart van Hove, Pierre Cuypers designed the pedestal. The whole was unveiled on July 10, 1904.

Until 2013, you could ignite the flame of the torch/torch via a coin machine. However, the city council no longer wanted to collaborate with the Liège artists' collective Space Liège, which for many years was responsible for the coin machine used to ignite the flame.

Minckelers is remembered as an inventor of coal gasification and gas lighting and as the first to do this at a practical scale. Minckelers is a statue, created by Bart van Hove, that carries an "eternal" gas light. For sustainability and budget reasons, the flame is coin operated since 2006. Another statue of him is in Heverlee near the science buildings of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. A number of schools and streets in the Netherlands and Belgium carry his name, including a street in the center of Leuven.
