Gassel traditionally fell under the parish of Escharen, together with the hamlets of Tongelaar, Langenboom and Hal. In the Middle Ages, Gassel already had its own chapel, but the Eighty Years' War put an end to that. In the eighteenth century, the pastor of Escharen wanted to come to Gassel for a Holy Mass.

The Sint-Janskerk or Johannes de Doperkerk is a church building in Gassel in the municipality of Land van Cuijk in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. The church is located at Julianaplein 1 and is dedicated to John the Baptist.
Before the current neo-Gothic church was built, there was a Gothic church in Gassel. In 1847, it was equipped with a Smits organ.
In 1875, the neo-Gothic church was built to a design by architect J. Werten.
On 27 May 2003, the church building was included in the national monument register.
