In the center of Praça da Figueira, there is this beautiful and slender bronze equestrian statue of King D. Joao I on a high stone pedestal. It was built in 1971 on the basis of where the old Figueira market was located.

Figueira Square (Praça Figueira) is located in the center of Lisbon, in Baixa Pombalina, between Rossio Square and Martim Moniz Square. It is one of the most atmospheric squares in the city, full of hotels, cafes (like the famous Confeitaria Nacional) and shops that keep it moving day and night.

The Praça da Fig Tree (Fig Tree Square), along with the Praça do Comércio and Rossio, is one of the three most important squares in the Baixa Pombalina, the area rebuilt following the earthquake of 1755.

Until the 16th century, the square did not exist; the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos (Royal All Saints Hospital), the largest of its kind in the Portuguese capital, stood on most of its site. After the devastating earthquake of 1755, the hospital was severely damaged, so the Lisbon city government decided to demolish it.
