Around 1400 the nucleus was fortified and disputed by some local families also due to its dominant position and control over the valleys below. In 1405 a large part of the current municipal district was annexed to the Florentine Republic, constituting the oldest Podesteria in the Savio Valley. The Municipality was established with a regulation of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo dated 24 July 1775.
