It was the place chosen by the liberators Don José De San Martín and Simón Bolívar during the liberation of the peoples of South America.
The monument to Simón Bolívar was donated by the Venezuelan people and inaugurated in 1985. The square is a nucleus of the historic center from the 18th century, the Municipal Palace and the Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History are also located here.
