The city of Plasencia is blessed with two cathedrals. One from the 13th century and one from the 15th century. The idea was to demolish the old one when the new one was finished, but that never happened.

Two great churches for the price of one. Originally proposed to be two churches, the work overlapped during the 15th and 16th centuries, and when the work was completed the Old and New churches were joined.

The Old Cathedral follows a Romanesque plan, despite having been built in the 13th century. Almost all European artistic styles arrived in Extremadura with a considerable delay, since it was the border between the Christian and Muslim kingdoms. Thus, although the Romanesque style arrived in the north of the Peninsula in the 10th and 11th centuries, it was not applied in this area until the 13th century.
