The oldest Appenzell parishes are those in Herisau and Appenzell, followed by those in Hundwil and Gais. In 1333, a daughter church of St. Laurenzius in St. Gallen was documented in Gais. The end of the Appenzell Wars (1401-1429) brought numerous new members to the parish, so that the previous church became too small and had to make way for a new building around 1460. Gais adopted the Reformation in 1525. The second church building was expanded in 1685, and renovated by Hans Ulrich Grubenmann in 1753.
