The building once served as the region's logistics center, housing post offices, the main postal headquarters, telegraph stations, and official residences. During the GDR era, it retained its function as the city's central post office and was even commemorated in 1982 with its own postage stamp in the GDR's "Buildings of the German Post Office" series. Following extensive renovations in 2006–2007, the building now serves a mixed-use purpose. The ground floor continues to house a post office branch, complemented by modern retail shops and office space.

The Main Post Office is a building originally built as an Imperial Main Post Office, designed by the Construction Department of the Reichspostamt in Berlin under August Kind (floor plan) and Julius Carl Raschdorff (detail). Neo-Gothic style was chosen for the architectural design. It was planned by the architect Klamodt. Previously, medieval houses stood here, including two patrician houses. The Main Post Office is a corner building, with the Main Post Office Tower located at its corner. The Main Post Office Tower's spire was destroyed by artillery fire in April 1945 and subsequently rebuilt in a simplified form by 1949.
