The Masconomet Burial Site on Sagamore Hill is where Masconomet, the sagamore of the Agawam tribe of Algonquians is buried. He ruled over tribal lands from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River until his death on March 6, 1658. Buried on Sagamore Hill in Ipswich, his grave was desecrated in 1659, leading to a public outcry and eventual reburial with proper funerary rituals in 1993. A memorial stone was placed in 1910, and a larger monument erected in 1971. Today, the site is considered a sacred space, so please be respectful when you visit.
